Complete Guide: Changing Words into Different Parts of Speech

In English, you can transform a word from one part of speech to another by adding suffixes (endings) or sometimes by changing the internal form. This process is called derivation. Below is a systematic chart showing the most common patterns.

1. Noun → Adjective

Suffix Base Word (Noun) Adjective हिंदी अर्थ Example
-y dirt dirty गंदा The floor is dirty.
cloud cloudy बादलों भरा It’s a cloudy day.
-ful care careful सावधान Be careful while crossing.
beauty beautiful सुंदर She has a beautiful voice.
-less hope hopeless निराश The situation is hopeless.
home homeless बेघर Many people are homeless.
-al nature natural प्राकृतिक This is natural juice.
education educational शैक्षिक It’s an educational trip.
-ous danger dangerous खतरनाक The road is dangerous.
fame famous प्रसिद्ध He is a famous actor.
-ic history historic ऐतिहासिक This is an historic moment.
economy economic आर्थिक Economic growth is slow.
-ive creation creative रचनात्मक She has a creative mind.
attention attentive चौकन्ना He is attentive in class.
-en wood wooden लकड़ी का It’s a wooden table.
gold golden सुनहरा She has golden hair.

2. Noun → Verb

Suffix / Change Base Word (Noun) Verb हिंदी अर्थ Example
-ize / -ise apology apologize माफी माँगना He apologized for his mistake.
memory memorize याद करना I need to memorize this poem.
-ify beauty beautify सुंदर बनाना They plan to beautify the park.
horror horrify डराना The news horrified everyone.
-en length lengthen लंबा करना Can you lengthen this rope?
strength strengthen मजबूत करना Exercise strengthens muscles.
No suffix water water पानी देना She waters the plants.
bottle bottle बोतल में भरना They bottled the juice.

3. Adjective → Noun

Suffix Adjective Noun हिंदी अर्थ Example
-ness happy happiness खुशी Happiness is important.
kind kindness दयालुता I appreciate your kindness.
-ity active activity गतिविधि Physical activity is good.
creative creativity रचनात्मकता She is full of creativity.
-ence / -ance intelligent intelligence बुद्धिमत्ता Her intelligence is high.

-dom free freedom स्वतंत्रता We value freedom.
wise wisdom ज्ञान He spoke with wisdom.
-th strong strength ताकत She showed great strength.
wide width चौड़ाई Measure the width.

4. Adjective → Adverb

Suffix Adjective Adverb हिंदी अर्थ Example
-ly quick quickly तेज़ी से He ran quickly.
careful carefully सावधानी से Drive carefully.
-ily (y→i) easy easily आसानी से She solved it easily.
happy happily खुशी से They lived happily.
-ally (ic→ically) automatic automatically स्वचालित रूप से The door opens automatically.
enthusiastic enthusiastically उत्साह से He joined enthusiastically.
Irregular good well अच्छे से She sings well.
fast fast तेज़ी से He runs fast. (no change)

5. Verb → Noun

-tion / -sion educate education शिक्षा Education is essential.
decide decision निर्णय His decision was final.
-er / -or teach teacher शिक्षक She is a good teacher.
act actor अभिनेता He is a famous actor.
-ment develop development विकास Development takes time.
agree agreement समझौता They signed an agreement.
-ance / -ence appear appearance दिखावट Her appearance changed.
depend dependence निर्भरता Dependence on others is bad.
-ing swim swimming तैराकी Swimming is my hobby.
read reading पढ़ाई Reading is fun.

6. Verb → Adjective

-able / -ible read readable पढ़ने योग्य Your handwriting is readable.
access accessible सुलभ The website is accessible.
-ive act active सक्रिय She is an active member.
create creative रचनात्मक He has a creative mind.
-ing (present participle) interest interesting दिलचस्प The movie is interesting.
-ed (past participle) interest interested रुचि रखने वाला I am interested in art.
-ful help helpful सहायक He is always helpful.
-less help helpless असहाय The child felt helpless.

7. Special Internal Changes (Irregular Forms)

Some words change their form completely without adding a suffix.

⚠️ Important Spelling Rules

Rule Example
y → i when adding suffix (except -ing) happy → happiness, easy → easily, but carry → carrying (no change before -ing)
e drop before vowel suffix create → creative, fame → famous
double consonant after short vowel run → runner, big → bigger
c → ck in some cases panic → panicking
-ic → -ically for adverbs automatic → automatically
