3-Entry Modal Verb Chart

Modal Usage / Function Explanation Example
1 can Ability (present) Shows someone has the skill or capability to do something now. She can play the violin beautifully.
2 can Permission (informal) Asks or gives permission in everyday, casual situations. Can I take a break now?
3 can Possibility (general) Describes something that is generally possible or typical. It can snow heavily in this region during winter.
4 could Ability (past) Expresses a past skill or capability that no longer exists or existed then. When I was younger, I could run a marathon.
5 could Polite request / permission Used to ask for permission or make a request in a very polite way. Could you please turn down the music?
6 could Possibility (less certain) Indicates a possibility that is real but not highly probable. He could arrive by 8 if the traffic is light.
7 may Formal permission Used to ask or give permission in formal contexts. May I be excused from the meeting?
8 may Possibility (present/future) Shows something is possible but not certain. We may go to the mountains this weekend.
9 might Possibility (weak or remote) Indicates a possibility that is even less likely than “may”. might take the job, but I’m not sure yet.
10 must Strong obligation Expresses a necessity or duty, often from the speaker’s authority. You must wear a helmet when riding a bike.
11 must Logical deduction / certainty Used when the speaker is almost sure something is true based on evidence. The lights are on; she must be home.
12 mustn’t Prohibition Forbids something; it is not allowed. You mustn’t touch that wire – it’s dangerous.
13 shall Suggestion / offer (with I/we) Makes a polite suggestion or offers to do something. Shall I prepare dinner for everyone?
14 should Advice / recommendation Gives advice or suggests a good course of action. You should get some rest if you’re tired.
15 should Expectation / probability Says something is likely or expected based on normal circumstances. The parcel should arrive by tomorrow.
16 ought to Moral obligation / duty Similar to “should” but often implies a moral or social duty. We ought to help those less fortunate.
17 will Certain future Expresses a definite future action or event. will finish the report by Friday.
18 will Willingness / offer Shows someone is willing to do something, or makes an offer. will carry that bag for you.
