‘One English’ ब्लॉग के लिए Was और Were का प्रयोग समझना बहुत ज़रूरी है। ये “To Be” क्रिया के भूतकाल के रूप (Past Forms) हैं। इनका उपयोग मुख्य रूप से अतीत की पहचान, स्थिति या चल रहे कार्यों को बताने के लिए किया जाता है।
यहाँ Was और Were के सभी उपयोग प्रकार, उनके फॉर्मूला और 50 उदाहरण दिए गए हैं।
📘 Basic Rules & Subject Agreement
* Was: Singular Subjects के साथ (I, He, She, It, Name, Singular Noun)।
* Were: Plural Subjects के साथ (We, You, They, Plural Noun)।
1. Simple Past State (अतीत की स्थिति या पहचान)
Formula: Subject + was/were + Noun/Adjective
* I was a student. (मैं एक छात्र था।)
* She was very happy. (वह बहुत खुश थी।)
* They were best friends. (वे पक्के दोस्त थे।)
* It was a cold night. (वह एक ठंडी रात थी।)
* Ram was an honest man. (राम एक ईमानदार आदमी था।)
* We were in Delhi last year. (हम पिछले साल दिल्ली में थे।)
* You were very brave. (तुम बहुत बहादुर थे।)
* The food was delicious. (खाना स्वादिष्ट था।)
* My keys were on the table. (मेरी चाबियाँ मेज पर थीं।)
* The movie was boring. (फिल्म उबाऊ थी।)
2. Past Continuous Tense (अतीत में जारी काम)
Formula: Subject + was/were + V1 + ing + Object
* I was watching TV. (मैं टीवी देख रहा था।)
* He was sleeping at that time. (वह उस समय सो रहा था।)
* They were playing cricket. (वे क्रिकेट खेल रहे थे।)
* It was raining heavily. (तेज़ बारिश हो रही थी।)
* We were waiting for the bus. (हम बस का इंतज़ार कर रहे थे।)
* She was cooking dinner. (वह रात का खाना बना रही थी।)
* You were driving fast. (तुम तेज़ गाड़ी चला रहे थे।)
* The birds were chirping. (पक्षी चहचहा रहे थे।)
* Children were making a noise. (बच्चे शोर मचा रहे थे।)
* I was writing a letter. (मैं एक पत्र लिख रहा था।)
3. Passive Voice (Past Indefinite)
Formula: Object + was/were + V3 + (by + Subject)
* The window was broken by him. (खिड़की उसके द्वारा तोड़ी गई थी।)
* Letters were written yesterday. (कल पत्र लिखे गए थे।)
* I was invited to the party. (मुझे पार्टी में आमंत्रित किया गया था।)
* Trees were cut down. (पेड़ काट दिए गए थे।)
* The thief was caught by the police. (चोर पुलिस द्वारा पकड़ा गया था।)
4. Negative Sentences (नकारात्मक)
Formula: Subject + was/were + not + Object/V-ing
* I was not angry. (मैं गुस्सा नहीं था।)
* She was not present in the class. (वह कक्षा में उपस्थित नहीं थी।)
* They were not ready. (वे तैयार नहीं थे।)
* It was not my fault. (यह मेरी गलती नहीं थी।)
* We were not late. (हमें देर नहीं हुई थी।)
5. Interrogative Sentences (प्रश्नवाचक)
Formula: Was/Were + Subject + Object/V-ing?
* Was I wrong? (क्या मैं गलत था?)
* Was she at the office? (क्या वह ऑफिस में थी?)
* Were they your relatives? (क्या वे आपके रिश्तेदार थे?)
* Was it expensive? (क्या यह महंगा था?)
* Were you crying? (क्या तुम रो रहे थे?)
6. With ‘Wh’ Words (प्रश्नवाचक शब्द)
Formula: Wh-word + was/were + Subject + …?
* Who was that man? (वह आदमी कौन था?)
* Where were you yesterday? (कल तुम कहाँ थे?)
* Why was he sad? (वह उदास क्यों था?)
* What was the problem? (समस्या क्या थी?)
* How were the exams? (परीक्षाएं कैसी थीं?)
7. Conditional Sentences (Imaginary/कल्पना)
नियम: कल्पना वाले वाक्यों में (If के साथ) सभी Subjects के साथ Were आता है।
Formula: If + Subject + were + Object, …
* If I were a bird, I would fly. (अगर मैं पक्षी होता, तो उड़ जाता।)
* If he were rich, he would help. (अगर वह अमीर होता, तो मदद करता।)
* I wish she were here. (काश वह यहाँ होती।)
* If they were honest, they wouldn’t lie. (अगर वे ईमानदार होते, तो झूठ नहीं बोलते।)
* If I were the PM, I would change it. (अगर मैं प्रधानमंत्री होता, तो इसे बदल देता।)
8. Use with ‘There’ (अतीत का परिचय)
Formula: There + was/were + Noun
* There was a king. (एक राजा था।)
* There were many people. (वहाँ कई लोग थे।)
* There was no water in the glass. (गिलास में पानी नहीं था।)
* There were many stars in the sky. (आसमान में कई तारे थे।)
* There was a problem with the car. (कार में एक समस्या थी।)
💡 One English Tip:
याद रखें, Was/Were का प्रयोग तभी करें जब आप बीते हुए समय (Past) की बात कर रहे हों। अगर ‘If’ वाले वाक्य में कल्पना (Wish) कर रहे हैं, तो हमेशा Were का ही प्रयोग करें, चाहे Subject ‘I’ या ‘He’ ही क्यों न हो।
