Introduction / परिचय

Direct Speech repeats the exact words of a speaker (using quotation marks). Indirect Speech (Reported Speech) reports what someone said without using their exact words. Errors in narration include incorrect tense changes, wrong pronoun changes, faulty time/place word adjustments, and misuse of reporting verbs.

(Backshifting)

When the reporting verb is in past tense (said, told, asked), the tense of the reported speech usually changes (backshifts).

❌ Mistake: Not backshifting when required

Incorrect: He said, “I am tired.” → He said that he is tired.
Correct: He said that he was tired.

Incorrect: She said, “I will come.” → She said that she will come.
Correct: She said that she would come.

Incorrect: They said, “We have finished.” → They said that they have finished.
Correct: They said that they had finished.

Backshifting Table / Tense परिवर्तन तालिका:

Direct Tense Indirect Tense
Simple Present (V1) Simple Past (V2)
Present Continuous (is/am/are + V1ing) Past Continuous (was/were + V1ing)
Present Perfect (has/have + V3) Past Perfect (had + V3)
Simple Past (V2) Past Perfect (had + V3)
Past Continuous (was/were + V1ing) Past Perfect Continuous (had been + V1ing)
Present Perfect Continuous Past Perfect Continuous
Future (will + V1) Conditional (would + V1)
Future Continuous (will be + V1ing) Conditional Continuous (would be + V1ing)
Future Perfect (will have + V3) Conditional Perfect (would have + V3)

Rule (English): If the reporting verb is in past tense, shift the tense of reported speech one step back into the past. If the reporting verb is present or future, no backshifting is needed.

नियम (हिंदी): यदि reporting verb past tense में है, तो reported speech के tense को एक कदम पीछे past में हटाएँ। यदि reporting verb present या future में है, तो कोई backshifting नहीं होती।

❌ Mistake: Backshifting universal truths or habits

Incorrect: The teacher said, “The Earth revolves around the Sun.” → The teacher said that the Earth revolved around the Sun.
Correct: The teacher said that the Earth revolves around the Sun. (universal truth – no change)

Incorrect: He said, “I wake up early every day.” → He said that he woke up early every day. (if still true, no change needed; both are acceptable, but no change is often preferred)
Better: He said that he wakes up early every day. (habit still true)

Rule (English): Do not backshift tenses for universal truths, scientific facts, geographical facts, or habitual actions that are still true.

नियम (हिंदी): सार्वभौमिक सत्यों, वैज्ञानिक तथ्यों, भौगोलिक तथ्यों या आदतन क्रियाओं के लिए tense backshift न करें जो अभी भी सत्य हैं।

2. Pronoun Change Errors / सर्वनाम परिवर्तन त्रुटियाँ

Pronouns in reported speech must change according to the subject and object of the reporting verb.

❌ Mistake: Wrong pronoun person

Incorrect: He said, “I like coffee.” → He said that I liked coffee. (wrong – should be “he”)
Correct: He said that he liked coffee.

Incorrect: She said, “You are nice.” → She said that you were nice. (if “you” refers to me, then “I”)
Correct: She said that I was nice. (assuming “you” means the listener)

Incorrect: They said, “We are coming.” → They said that we are coming. (should be “they”)
Correct: They said that they were coming.

Pronoun Change Rules (First Person, Second Person, Third Person):

Direct Pronoun Change To Example
I, we (first person) According to subject of reporting verb He said, “I like tea” → He said that he liked tea.
you (second person) According to object of reporting verb He said to me, “You are kind” → He told me that I was kind.
he, she, it, they (third person) No change He said, “She is smart” → He said that she was smart.

Rule (English): First person pronouns change according to the subject of reporting verb. Second person pronouns change according to the object of reporting verb. Third person pronouns do not change.

नियम (हिंदी): First person pronouns reporting verb के subject के अनुसार बदलते हैं। Second person pronouns reporting verb के object के अनुसार बदलते हैं। Third person pronouns नहीं बदलते।

3. Time and Place Word Change Errors / समय और स्थान शब्द परिवर्तन त्रुटियाँ

Words indicating nearness (here, now, today) change to words indicating distance (there, then, that day).

❌ Mistake: Not changing time/place words

Incorrect: He said, “I will come now.” → He said that he would come now.
Correct: He said that he would come then.

Incorrect: She said, “I live here.” → She said that she lived here.
Correct: She said that she lived there.

Incorrect: They said, “We arrived yesterday.” → They said that they arrived yesterday.
Correct: They said that they had arrived the previous day.

Time/Place Change Table:

Direct Indirect
now then
today that day
tonight that night
yesterday the previous day / the day before
tomorrow the next day / the following day
here there
this that
these those
ago before / earlier
last week the previous week / the week before
next week the following week

Rule (English): Change nearness words to distance words when converting to indirect speech, unless the context still makes sense without change (e.g., if still in the same place/same day).

नियम (हिंदी): Indirect speech में बदलते समय nearness words को distance words में बदलें, जब तक कि संदर्भ अभी भी वैसा ही हो (जैसे उसी स्थान/उसी दिन में)।

4. Reporting Verb Errors / Reporting Verb त्रुटियाँ

Common errors: using “said” with an object incorrectly, confusing “said” and “told”, and using wrong reporting verbs for questions/commands.

❌ Mistake 1: Using “said” with an object (without “to”)

Incorrect: He said me, “I am busy.”
Correct: He said to me, “I am busy.” OR He told me, “I am busy.”

Rule (English): “Say” is not followed directly by an object. Use “say to + object” or use “tell + object” (without “to”).

नियम (हिंदी): “Say” के बाद सीधे object नहीं आता। “say to + object” प्रयोग करें या “tell + object” (बिना “to” के) प्रयोग करें।

❌ Mistake 2: Using “told” without an object

Incorrect: He told, “I am happy.”
Correct: He said, “I am happy.” (tell needs an object: told me, told him)

Rule (English): “Tell” must have an indirect object (someone). “Say” does not require an object.

नियम (हिंदी): “Tell” के साथ indirect object (someone) आना चाहिए। “Say” के साथ object की आवश्यकता नहीं।

❌ Mistake 3: Wrong reporting verb for questions

Incorrect: He said, “Where are you going?” (said is not used for questions in indirect)
Correct: He asked where I was going.

Rule (English): For questions, use reporting verbs like asked, inquired, wanted to know. Do not use “said” or “told”.

नियम (हिंदी): प्रश्नों के लिए asked, inquired, wanted to know जैसे reporting verbs का प्रयोग करें। “said” या “told” का प्रयोग न करें।

5. Connector (That) Errors / Connector (That) त्रुटियाँ

❌ Mistake: Omitting “that” in formal writing

Incorrect: He said he was tired. (informally acceptable, but formal requires “that”)
Formal correct: He said that he was tired.

Incorrect: She told me she would come.
Formal correct: She told me that she would come.

Rule (English): In formal writing, use “that” to introduce the reported speech after verbs like say, tell, think, know, believe, hope.

नियम (हिंदी): औपचारिक लेखन में, say, tell, think, know, believe, hope जैसी क्रियाओं के बाद reported speech लाने के लिए “that” का प्रयोग करें।

❌ Mistake: Using “that” in questions

Incorrect: He asked that where I was going.
Correct: He asked where I was going. (no “that” in indirect questions)

Rule (English): Do not use “that” after question words (what, where, why, how) or after if/whether.

नियम (हिंदी): प्रश्नवाचक शब्दों (what, where, why, how) या if/whether के बाद “that” का प्रयोग न करें।

6. Indirect Question Errors / अप्रत्यक्ष प्रश्न त्रुटियाँ

❌ Mistake 1: Wrong word order (keeping question order)

Incorrect: He asked where was I going. (question word order)
Correct: He asked where I was going. (subject before verb)

See also  Additional Important Rules of Narration with Complete Examples

Incorrect: She asked what did I want.
Correct: She asked what I wanted.

Rule (English): In indirect questions, the word order is subject + verb (not auxiliary + subject). Do not use “do/does/did”.

नियम (हिंदी): अप्रत्यक्ष प्रश्नों में शब्द क्रम subject + verb होता है (auxiliary + subject नहीं)। “do/does/did” का प्रयोग न करें।

❌ Mistake 2: Missing “if/whether” for yes/no questions

Incorrect: He asked I was coming.
Correct: He asked if I was coming. OR He asked whether I was coming.

Incorrect: She wanted to know he liked tea.
Correct: She wanted to know if he liked tea.

Rule (English): For yes/no questions (no question word), use “if” or “whether” as the connector.

नियम (हिंदी): Yes/no questions (जिनमें कोई question word नहीं) के लिए connector के रूप में “if” या “whether” का प्रयोग करें।

❌ Mistake 3: Using “that” with if/whether

Incorrect: He asked that if I was coming.
Correct: He asked if I was coming.

Rule (English): Do not use “that” together with “if” or “whether”.

नियम (हिंदी): “if” या “whether” के साथ “that” का प्रयोग न करें।

7. Indirect Imperative Errors (Commands & Requests) / अप्रत्यक्ष आदेश त्रुटियाँ

❌ Mistake: Using “that” instead of “to”

Incorrect: He said that to go away.
Correct: He told me to go away.

Incorrect: She said that not to be late.
Correct: She told me not to be late.

Formula for imperatives:
Reporting verb (ordered, requested, told, asked, advised) + object + to + V1 (for positive)
Reporting verb + object + not + to + V1 (for negative)

Common reporting verbs for commands/requests: ordered, commanded, requested, begged, told, asked, advised, forbade (for negative)

Rule (English): For imperatives, use “to + infinitive”. Do not use “that”. Use “forbade” for negative commands.

नियम (हिंदी): आदेश/अनुरोध के लिए “to + infinitive” का प्रयोग करें। “that” का प्रयोग न करें। नकारात्मक आदेशों के लिए “forbade” का प्रयोग करें।

❌ Mistake: Wrong reporting verb for request

Incorrect: He ordered me to please help him. (order is too strong for a polite request)
Correct: He requested me to help him. OR He asked me to help him.

Rule (English): Choose the reporting verb according to the tone: ordered (command), requested (polite ask), advised (suggestion), begged (urgent request).

नियम (हिंदी): टोन के अनुसार reporting verb चुनें: ordered (आदेश), requested (विनम्र अनुरोध), advised (सलाह), begged (अनुरोध)।

8. Indirect Exclamation Errors (Exclamatory Sentences) / विस्मयादिबोधक वाक्य त्रुटियाँ

❌ Mistake: Keeping exclamation structure

Incorrect: He said, “What a beautiful day!” → He said that what a beautiful day it was.
Correct: He exclaimed with joy that the day was very beautiful.

Formulas for exclamations:

  • What a + noun! → exclaimed with joy/surprise that + subject + was very + adjective

  • How + adjective! → exclaimed that + subject + was very + adjective

  • Alas! / Oh! → exclaimed with sorrow/surprise that…

Rule (English): Change exclamations into statements using “exclaimed with joy/sorrow/surprise” and remove exclamatory words (what, how, alas). Use “very” or “great” to express the emotion.

नियम (हिंदी): विस्मयादिबोधक वाक्यों को “exclaimed with joy/sorrow/surprise” का प्रयोग करके statements में बदलें और विस्मयादिबोधक शब्दों (what, how, alas) को हटाएँ। भावना व्यक्त करने के लिए “very” या “great” का प्रयोग करें।
