• Used for an action that was in progress for a duration of time before another action or time in the past. It shows the cause of a past action or emphasizes the duration of a past activity.
• Structure: Subject + had been + verb + ing + object + since/for + time + before another past action.
• Had been is used with ALL subjects (I, you, he, she, it, we, they).
• Negative: Subject + had not been (hadn’t been) + verb+ing.
